Chiquita Statement - EPA Letter
Chiquita Canyon, LLC has been working closely with local, state, and federal regulators to address the Elevated Temperature Landfill (ETLF) event (or reaction) taking place deep within a lined, but older and inactive portion of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill and any related impacts.
To date, we have deployed every available technology and strategy recommended by our technical experts to contain and manage this complex reaction. We continue to invest significant resources in monitoring, gas control, leachate management, and more.
On March 17, Chiquita received two directives from the EPA requiring additional work under its Unilateral Administrative Order. The EPA’s increased coordination role is common in complex situations such as the one currently facing Chiquita. Chiquita sought direct engagement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help cut through the bureaucratic complexity in California and align everyone around a single, science based action plan to mitigate the Elevated Temperature Landfill event taking place at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill. We welcome the EPA’s leadership, look forward to continued cooperation with all local and state regulators, and remain committed to clear communication with the surrounding communities as this work progresses.
